How do I prevent automatic downloads for iOS updates?

I'm planning to update my phone to iOS 26.2 tonight, but I'm a bit confused about the update process. When it shows the message about automatically downloading updates, I'm not sure if I should click on anything to ensure it doesn't download without my permission. I want to have control over when to update my device, so any advice on how to handle this would be appreciated!

I’m not quite sure what screen you’re seeing because there's no 'Continue' button for updates. Apple aims to make things straightforward for users, they wouldn't want to confuse anyone. If you're unsure, maybe try looking up the specific screen or message you're getting.

Why would you want to avoid automatic downloads? Most people find it easier to have updates done for them. If you want to hold off, just keep an eye on your settings to ensure that automatic downloads are turned off.

If your phone supports iOS 26.2 and your battery is in good shape, there's not much reason to avoid upgrading. But if you really want to wait, I'd recommend not downloading it right away since that just takes up space on your phone. The update will prompt you again after a while if you don't install it. Just make sure to manage your settings to prevent auto-downloads for the future.
