I'm 32 and have a bachelor's degree in Computer Science, but I didn't really learn much during my studies. I also worked for 2.5 years as a software developer, but I didn't gain the experience I was hoping for. After trying to pivot into another industry unsuccessfully, I'm now looking to return to tech, ideally in a junior developer role. I've had little luck getting callbacks for interviews. I'd love to hear any tips on how to re-enter the field and improve my skills!

The best way to improve your skills is to start working on projects that interest you. Try using free APIs, explore different programming paradigms, and don’t worry about making everything perfect. The goal is to learn! Make sure you're also familiar with Git and basic CI/CD processes. Mobile app development could be a great field to explore as it's growing, but definitely don't ignore web apps. Also, when you’re interviewing, focus on the projects you’ve completed rather than just your degree. What you can demonstrate is usually what counts the most! Don’t be afraid to use AI tools like Cursor or Windsurf to speed up your learning process, but make sure to understand how they work. If you need project ideas, just ask!
Stop downplaying your skills! You might be more capable than you think. Build projects, tackle harder tasks, and boost your confidence. It’s all about growing and pushing yourself.
Yeah, when I read this sub, the amount of work that people have put in to get jobs is like two or three notches higher than where I am. But I understand what you’re saying! I really need to start!
Have you considered diving into prompt engineering? It's becoming a really hot skill in the industry and could open up new opportunities for you.
Shall look into it!
Definitely brush up on your data structures and algorithms, and don’t skip out on interview prep. Create a fun project to showcase on your resume, and just apply to as many positions as you can. It’s also a good idea to reconnect with friends in the tech industry; they might have leads or advice for you.
Makes sense!
Fantastic. Thanks for the detailed response! Shall follow it to the end!
