Hey everyone! We've got Lenovo and Fujitsu notebooks at my company, and I'm looking for advice on how to effectively trace and secure them to prevent theft. Recently, one of our notebooks went missing, and we suspect a guest may have taken it. How do you guys keep track of your laptops and what steps do you take to ensure they're not stolen? Thanks for any tips!

We handle tracking pretty simply with basic asset management. Some people call it just using Excel! Also, I make sure to lock my office whenever I'm not around, especially since all our valuables are kept there. For our cloud devices, we use Intune and Defender, which provide details like last login time and location if we need to investigate.
All our laptops are equipped with 5G and managed through Defender and Intune. For us, if a laptop is reported stolen, our focus is more on locking it down and securing the data rather than physically recovering it. Plus, we have a sign-out process for loaner laptops to track guests better.
Honestly, it’s often not worth the time and effort to track down a stolen laptop completely. We use Full Disk Encryption (like Bitlocker), and if a device goes missing, we just issue a wipe command through Intune. HR takes it from there, and it’s not really an IT issue anymore.
We label every laptop with asset tags and register them in our inventory system, making it easier to keep track. Using Microsoft Intune also means we can wipe devices remotely if they ever go missing. It’s a great precaution!
My approach is all about asset management. Each laptop is linked to a specific employee, which helps us keep track of who's using what. This really cuts down on confusion and potential loss.
That makes sense! Having everything tied to an employee could definitely help simplify tracking.
We use Absolute Computrace for tracking. It works well with our Dell laptops, so I'd assume you can integrate it with Lenovo and Fujitsu too. It’s super handy for keeping tabs on devices.
We treat laptops like any other asset. We ensure they're basically useless to anyone else by having strong security measures in place. If a laptop goes missing, it’s more about damage control than recovery for us.
That sounds like a solid plan! I've heard good things about Intune for remote management.
