I'm trying to help my mother-in-law with her Intel-era MacBook Pro. She used to log into a schoolboard email account that's no longer active since her retirement. We're looking to remove this email account from her computer, but I'm hitting a roadblock. When I go to 'Accounts' in System Preferences to remove the account, it asks for the password associated with that email. Since she can't reset that password because the account has been deleted, I'm wondering if there's a way to remove this account by formatting the whole system, or is there a better option? I can provide more details like the macOS version or model number if needed. Thanks!

Sounds like you're dealing with an internet account, not a user account. If you're on an Intel MacBook Pro that's older than 2019, you might consider resetting the whole system back to factory settings. This will erase everything and give you a fresh start. Do you want to go that route?
If it's just the email account, removing it shouldn't be difficult. You usually just need to cancel the password prompt when you select it in System Preferences. Look for a minus sign somewhere in the lower corner to delete it without needing the password.
