How would you structure guns with different abilities in Roblox?

I’m building a gun system where most differences are data like ammo, range, recoil, and assets, but some guns also have unique abilities. Would you put those abilities in subclasses, or make them separate behaviors that a shared controller can use?

Keep the shared gun logic in one controller, and represent each ability as a separate module with a predictable set of functions. The controller can call the ability when needed, while each module handles its own behavior. That makes it easier to mix abilities across guns without creating a new class for every combination.

Think of it as composition versus inheritance. If a gun is mostly the same as every other gun and just has different stats or add-on abilities, assembling it from data and behavior modules is usually a cleaner starting point. Inheritance can still make sense when there are genuinely different kinds of guns with substantially different rules, but it can get awkward if every new variant needs its own subclass.

So the ability module is attached to the shared controller, rather than each ability being a kind of gun?

I wouldn’t try to design the perfect architecture before the first working version. Start with the simplest structure that supports a couple of guns, then see where the repetition or awkwardness actually shows up. Refactoring after testing a small prototype is often more useful than guessing every future requirement upfront.
