I Got a Shockingly High Google Maps API Bill! What Should I Do?

Hey everyone! I'm in a bit of a crisis here and really need some advice. I've been working on a feature for my website using the Google Maps API and I just got hit with a bill close to $10,000 after only 4 days of testing. I honestly didn't expect it at all, and I feel completely overwhelmed. I don't have that kind of money, especially since I'm a student preparing for university this September.

I've had no notifications about this; the only warning I received was about some 'suspicious activity' when they detected the huge bill. It feels unjust and too much for someone who's just trying to work on a small project.

What should I do now? I haven't paid anything yet, but I'm freaking out about the possibility of being charged. Who can I contact about this? Is there a chance they might waive the bill? I would really appreciate any help or experiences you could share about getting out of a situation like this!

Reaching out and explaining your situation is definitely your best bet. Also, set up billing alerts for future projects. You don’t want to get blindsided like this again. In the worst-case scenario, you can dispute it if they try to charge you, but I think you'll be okay talking to them.

Would it help if I said it was a mistake due to a hack attempt? Like, would they take that seriously?

Yeah, just be honest — but keep it real about your coding practices too. They appreciate transparency!

Wow, that's a crazy bill! To rack up that much in just 4 days, there’s probably something going wrong in your code or perhaps your API key was exposed. You could be making millions of calls inadvertently. Have you checked if your key was uploaded to a public repository or something? It's easy to overlook during testing.

Yeah, if you didn’t secure the API key, that’s a big red flag. Maybe someone else ended up using it too.

I've seen worse cases where folks got hit with high charges because their keys were exposed online. Definitely worth double-checking!

I suggest just reaching out to Google support. Explain that you accidentally racked up this bill and hope they'll waive it. They’re often lenient with first-time mistakes — I had to do that once, and they forgave me a hefty AWS bill after I explained the situation. Just be honest!

Do you have a specific contact link I can use? I feel so lost trying to navigate their support.

Check their support case console online; it has all the info you'll need to contact them.
