I recently built my first PC, and while I was securing the motherboard to the case, a screw got stuck in one of the spacers. In trying to remove the screw, I accidentally scratched the motherboard a bit, and I can see some copper exposed. I'm wondering if this type of damage could affect the PC's performance or if it's a minor issue. Should I consider getting a new motherboard? Thanks for any help!

Generally, a small scratch isn’t a big deal, especially if it’s not damaging any critical parts. Motherboards have protective coatings to help with minor nicks. If you’ve just exposed some copper but it’s not fully broken, it should be fine. A quick visual inspection or using a multimeter will help confirm that there’s continuity. You could also use some clear nail polish to seal the scratch as a temporary fix.
You should take a close look at the scratched area. If it’s just cosmetic and doesn't affect any of the pathways on the PCB, you should be good! The scratch around a screw hole typically won’t cause problems since it’s meant to ground itself to the case. Just make sure it’s not too deep.
What if I actually see the copper? Is it still safe to use?
Make sure you fished that screw out! If it’s still stuck somewhere in the case, it could cause more trouble. Otherwise, you should be alright; just keep an eye on how the PC performs once you’ve got everything set up.
I got the screw out! The PC runs fine now, but I did have to reset it once for an external hard drive issue.

Thanks for the advice! I might just do that.
