I recently got a new computer with 8 GB of memory, and I noticed that almost 5 GB of it is already being used. Is this typical? It seems like a lot to me.

You might want to consider upgrading your RAM. With how demanding modern software can be, more memory definitely helps with performance. Just make sure to check if your laptop allows for upgrades.
Is it possible to upgrade RAM on a laptop? I thought most were fixed.
Your laptop can support up to 16 GB total RAM and uses DDR4-3200 SODIMM modules, so you could potentially add 2x8GB sticks for dual-channel performance if it’s upgradeable.
Yeah, 8 GB of RAM isn't a ton these days, especially if you're running Windows. The OS and any open applications can eat up memory pretty quickly. It’s not unusual to see that much in use right away.
Some laptops do allow for RAM upgrades, while others have soldered memory. It all depends on your laptop model.
