I found some surgical spirit nearby and am wondering if it's suitable for cleaning my CPU. I've heard conflicting opinions about using denatured alcohol versus isopropyl alcohol. I want to make sure I don't damage my components. Thank you for your help!

From what I've gathered, 99.9% isopropyl alcohol is the ideal choice for cleaning electronics because it evaporates quickly and leaves no residue. Denatured alcohol, like ethanol with methanol, isn't as reliable since it might have other additives that could leave residues. I would say your ethyl alcohol should work, but remember, the purer the alcohol, the better for your CPU.
It should be fine as long as you don’t drink it! Just use a lint-free cloth to apply it—coffee filters can do the trick too. Just be cautious not to let moisture linger.
Are you just cleaning off old thermal paste? Sometimes you can get away with using a dry tissue to scrape it off, especially if you’re applying new paste afterward. I’ve even used water on a clean paper towel before, just be super careful not to get it on other parts—it’s mostly just the lid area that won’t get damaged by a little moisture.
I’ve used 92.6% alcohol before for cleaning thermal paste, and everything was okay. Just make sure you don’t leave any moisture on the CPU, especially around the pins.
Thanks for the reassurance!

Haha, no promises... but thanks a lot for the tips!
