Is it safe to soak a motherboard to clean it?

I received a motherboard from my brother that he claims worked fine until beer was spilled on the desktop. I tried cleaning it with a Q-tip and alcohol, but it was a slow process, and I'm not confident I got all the grime out. Is soaking the motherboard in a tub of alcohol a good idea? Also, I noticed there's a gash on the back of the motherboard but it doesn't seem to have severed any connections. Should I be concerned about that?

Honestly, I'd say don't waste your time on that motherboard. Even if you manage to fix it, it may fail soon because of the liquid damage. Better to invest in a new one.

Liquid damage can be tricky because it can lead to corrosion even if it isn't visible. Just cleaning the surface might not be enough. Instead of soaking the board, consider using a sprayer filled with isopropyl alcohol. Lean the motherboard against something and spray it down to force the alcohol through it. I've saved several boards this way, but keep in mind that oxidation can still be an issue.

Soaking it in distilled water could actually be a viable option since it won't have any harmful minerals. If it’s already non-functional, give it a try! Soak it for 2 to 4 hours, softly scrub sticky spots with a brush, and make sure to remove all components first. Leave it to dry for 24 to 48 hours before putting everything back.

I remember seeing someone wash a circuit board under running water, and it actually worked fine for them! Just make sure to remove any components, wash it with warm soapy water, and rinse with distilled water. Let it dry thoroughly afterwards. But be cautious; beer spills might have different effects.
