Is It Safe to Use a High Wattage Power Supply with Low Load?

Hey folks! I currently have a Ryzen 7 9800X3D and an RTX 5070 ti, running off a DEEPCOOL GamerStorm PN850M. I've noticed the fan isn't performing well anymore, so I'm considering switching to either the Thermaltake Toughpower GT 1200W or the 1000W version. I've heard some claims that if my power supply isn't fully utilized, it might not operate efficiently and could pose a risk, like potentially burning my PC down. Is there any truth to this?

I’ve got a similar setup, and I run on an 850w PSU without issues. Going for a 1000 or 1200w is often overkill unless you plan on adding more components in the future. Plus, the 80+ certification is all about efficiency, not safety—if you buy a quality unit, it won’t put your machine at risk.

The idea that an underloaded PSU could burn your PC is a myth. 80+ just measures efficiency at varying loads. Like a car, you don’t have to floor it all the time for it to drive smoothly. An 850w is usually the sweet spot for your components, unless you plan on serious upgrades.

Not true at all! Just because you go for a high wattage PSU doesn't mean it'll burn your system if there's low load. The 80+ certification guarantees efficiency across various loads. It doesn't mean the PSU goes haywire if you’re not using all its power. Just choose a reliable brand, and everything should be fine.
