I recently set up an old 3.5" HDD externally to use with my new laptop. I connected it via a SATA to USB cable, and I have a 12V adapter powering it. However, I'm just keeping the drive open without any enclosure, with the metal side facing down. Is this a safe way to use it?

You're good, but it’s actually better to keep the metal side up and the circuit board facing down. If you leave the circuit board exposed, there's a chance something could fall on it and cause a short. Also, it might be a good idea to place it on something non-conductive, like a small box, just in case you spill a drink nearby. Better safe than sorry!
Like a small cardboard box? Also, is it normal for it to get warm?
