I've been clean from heroin for 44 months and I hold a bachelor's degree in IT that I earned in 2019. I had about 4 months of experience in a helpdesk role back in 2020, but I've spent the last few years focusing on my recovery and healing. Now, I'm feeling almost back to my normal self and I'm wondering if I can return to an IT career, specifically in helpdesk or desktop support jobs. I'm really motivated to eventually advance to a system administrator or IT manager position. Is there still hope for me in the field? How should I address my employment gap during interviews? I can't shake the feeling that I'm behind my peers, and I'm seeking some encouragement. Has anyone here successfully transitioned into IT after overcoming similar struggles?

There’s no time limit on this! Don’t stress about being behind. Start with helpdesk roles, soak up as much knowledge as you can, and pursue certifications that interest you, like CompTIA or Azure. You’ll build confidence and skills fast!
Many people in IT started later, and you’ve got life experience that can be a huge asset. If you need to explain the gap, say it was personal matters. Focus on how you’ve grown and what you can bring to the table now. You’re capable of achieving your goals!
Well said! Your experience has made you stronger.
You’re definitely not alone in this! One of my best colleagues was a recovering addict and started later in life. Trust me, it’s never too late! Just be honest about your journey. If you show genuine passion and put in the work, you’ll get there!
Absolutely, honesty is key. It builds trust.
Go for it! The IT field is always evolving, and your life experiences can set you apart from younger candidates. Start at helpdesk if you need to — it’s a solid stepping stone. Stay determined and keep learning!
Exactly! Determination is key in this field.
Starting from the bottom is often necessary, but look at it this way: that bottom is way less rough than what you’ve overcome. If you can stick with it through tough days, you’ll find strength you didn’t know you had. You got this!
Exactly! Every day is a step forward.

And those certs will really help with your resume!
