Is It Worth Adding a Second GPU for Gaming?

I'm currently using an Intel Z790 motherboard and a GeForce 4070 GPU for gaming on a dual monitor setup. I've noticed some sales on leftover 4070 cards for around $350 and I'm curious whether adding a second 4070 would be a good idea compared to upgrading to a 50 series card instead. Does anyone have experience with this or advice on whether a second card is worth it?

You’d be better off selling your 4070 and investing in a single better GPU. Dual setups accomplish nothing for gaming these days and just create more heat without any benefit.

Honestly, adding a second GPU for gaming is a bad idea. Dual GPU setups are pretty much dead now, as the 40xx series doesn't even support SLI or NVLink anymore, meaning you won't see any improvement in performance.

It's true—unless you're doing something niche like AI work, you're not going to gain anything from a second GPU. The only scenarios where dual GPUs might help anymore are for specific tasks like LLMs or rendering, but for gaming? Just stick with what you have or upgrade.

Exactly! Like using programs that do Lossless Scaling can benefit from a second GPU, but in gaming, it's rarely useful. Just getting a better single GPU will likely give you a much better experience.

I agree with that! It's not worth it for any consumer-grade cards. SLI was abandoned a long time ago. Spending $350 on another 4070 would just be like buying a really expensive paperweight that won't help your gaming.
