Is it Worth Upgrading from an i7 9700K to an AMD 5800XT or a DDR5 CPU?

I'm currently running an i7 9700K, but it's starting to hold me back after years of use. I'm considering getting an AMD 5800XT for $220 to extend the life of my setup with DDR4 RAM, as I'd prefer not to spend $400 on the x3D version. I'm not super knowledgeable about computer components, so I'm curious about the potential FPS performance boost I could see in gaming. If the upgrade isn't that significant, I might be better off investing in a complete overhaul with a DDR5 CPU, motherboard, and RAM to future-proof my system. Also, how does my 9700K stack up against the newer Intel 14th gen i7 CPUs? Any rough estimates on the performance jump would be appreciated!

Microcenter has a deal on the 7600X3D for $400, which includes a motherboard and 16GB of DDR5 RAM. X3D processors are fantastic for gaming, and if you're playing at 1080p, you’ll definitely notice a significant boost in performance compared to the 9700K. For 1440p, the GPU will play a larger role, but it’s still worth considering.

If you're looking for a complete upgrade, consider selling your older parts and moving to an AM5 platform. You should aim to keep the total upgrade cost under $400 for the best value. This way, you'll get better performance with a modern system.

You can’t just switch from Intel to AMD without replacing the motherboard. If you choose AMD, the 5800X3D is the best option for longevity. Otherwise, an AM5 setup with DDR5 could be more future-proof. The 7600X performs comparably to the 5800X3D.

The 5800XT combined with a B550 motherboard would be a solid jump from your i7 9700K. The 5800XT falls into the performance range of Intel's 12th gen CPUs. However, moving to a 14th gen would represent a huge leap, but keep in mind you’ll need a new CPU and motherboard. Choose DDR4 for Intel since the 12th to 14th gen support both DDR4 and DDR5.

You might want to check out the i7-14700K or 14900K, as both of these support DDR4 and DDR5 RAM. They can offer a solid upgrade path without forcing you to switch entirely to DDR5 right away.
