Is it Worth Upgrading from Ryzen 5 5600 for an RTX 4070?

I'm currently using a Ryzen 5 5600 processor with an RTX 4070 graphics card. I've been considering an upgrade because I've heard my CPU might hold back the performance of my GPU. However, I know that the newer CPU generations require DDR5 RAM, and with the current state of RAM prices, I'm not sure if it's the right move. I'm looking for advice on whether I should stick with AMD or switch to Intel for my upgrade.

Ultimately, if your current setup isn't giving you any major issues, you might want to hold off on upgrading. But if you’re experiencing those stutters, it sounds like it could be worth investigating further before jumping into a new CPU.

If you're having stutters and freezes, it could be the CPU, but it might also be your motherboard or even your power supply. If your PSU is over 13 years old, that might be a sign it’s time for a replacement. So, before deciding on an upgrade, troubleshoot those issues first.

If you're looking for a solid upgrade while staying on the AM4 platform, you might find a used Ryzen 5900X on eBay for around $200-250. Alternatively, if you're really keen, the 5800X3D is also an option. If you switch to Intel, look for LGA 1700 boards that are DDR4 compatible and consider going for a 13600K or 14600K—those would give you a major boost!

Before making any decisions, check if your CPU is maxing out during gameplay. You can use the NVIDIA overlay stats to monitor your CPU usage. If it’s consistently at 90-100% and the GPU isn't fully utilized, then a CPU upgrade would help. Also, keep an eye on your CPU temps; overheating can lead to throttling.

Honestly, the Ryzen 5 5600 should be sufficient for your RTX 4070, especially at 1440p. There's not a significant CPU upgrade without moving to DDR5, which might not be worth the cost right now.
