Is Linux a Good Choice for Multiplayer Gaming?

I'm currently using Windows 10 and have until October 2026 to switch to Windows 11. I'm considering switching to Linux, but I'm worried about my multiplayer gaming experience. My friends and I often play a mix of multiplayer games, some of which have anti-cheat systems (like Apex Legends, Marathon, and GTA Online) or are known to be incompatible with Linux. I understand the risks associated with kernel anti-cheat software, and I'm not interested in that discussion. Would upgrading to Windows 11 be the better option for my gaming needs? I'm also thinking about dual-booting, but I hear that Windows 11 might complicate things with Linux.

Don't worry too much about gaming on Linux. You can use ProtonDB to check compatibility for your games, and many non-competitive multiplayer titles just work fine. I've played games like Ready or Not and Vermintide without issues. Just keep in mind that when dual-booting, your game library can’t be shared easily between Windows and Linux since they use different file systems.

If those multiplayer games with kernel-level anti-cheat are essential, then dual-booting is your best bet. You'll want to use separate disks for installing Windows and Linux to avoid bootloader issues. Accessing Windows-formatted file systems from Linux can be tricky, but it usually works.

Dual-booting is straightforward, but be wary of secure boot issues with some Linux distros. Check the compatibility of your games at areweanticheatyet.com. I play competitive games and haven't faced many problems since developers are starting to support Linux better. Make sure to choose a distro that handles secure boot well.

Honestly, if you're stuck on those specific multiplayer games that need kernel anti-cheat, you won’t be able to play them on Linux. Dual-booting Windows and Linux is a solid solution, but don't put them on the same partition as it can lead to problems.
