I recently built a new PC and I'm worried about the CPU temperature. I installed an AMD Ryzen 9 5900X with a be quiet! Dark Rock Pro 5 cooler. After applying thermal paste and ensuring everything was set up correctly, I noticed that my BIOS is showing a CPU temperature of 79°C and a package temperature of 90°C while idle. Is this temperature normal, or should I be concerned? Could there be a risk of long-term damage if I run it like this for a while?

A few things to check! First, did you remove any stickers from the cooler? That could be a big issue. Also, make sure the fans are spinning when your PC is on and that you're using the cooler’s higher RPM setting if it has one. And when you cleaned with alcohol, did you let it dry before applying the thermal paste?
That temp is way too high for BIOS! It sounds like your cooler isn't making good contact with the CPU. You might want to reinstall it and double-check that you removed any plastic film on the cooler's cold plate before mounting it. That could be the main culprit for those high readings.
No need to panic about immediate damage, but yes, those readings are way higher than what they should be. As everyone else suggested, verify that the protective film is off and try remounting the cooler. Also, don't overdo it on the thermal paste — just a thin layer is needed to fill the gaps.
Definitely too high for just hanging out in BIOS. Generally, you should see temps around 40°C there. Either the cooler is mounted incorrectly, or you might have forgotten to take off a protective sticker. I'd recommend checking those things first.
Yeah, those temps are concerning. I recently built a similar setup with the same CPU and my idle temps were much lower, even under load. I suggest reapplying thermal paste and making sure the cooler is mounted securely to ensure proper contact with the CPU.

Good catch on the sticker issue. But also, make sure the cooler is secured properly — sometimes not having enough pressure can cause this problem too.
