I'm gearing up for a big move, and my company is relocating from one building to another that's about 1,200 miles away. I'm focusing on the logistics of transporting around 8 rack mount and standalone servers. I've got a handle on the logical and network planning aspects, but I'm wondering whether my approach for physically moving these servers makes sense. My current strategy involves carefully removing everything and documenting it with photos, wrapping each machine in anti-static materials and bubble wrap, and then using a minivan with ratchet straps to secure the servers. Am I being too cautious or not cautious enough?

Honestly, a minivan isn’t the best option here. You really should look for specialized movers who are insured for this kind of transport. If something goes wrong during the move, it could end up costing you big time. Also, I wouldn’t remove the hard drives if you can avoid it. Keeping them in the chassis helps with vibration control.
