I recently visited my parents and noticed that their Chromebook has a noticeable bulge in the middle. I'm not familiar with the laptop's previous condition, so I'm unsure if it came that way or if the bulge indicates a problem. It really looks like a swollen battery to me. Is there a chance this is indeed a battery issue, or could it be something else?

Thanks for the confirmation, everyone! I’ve moved the Chromebook out of the house after your advice. Given its age and the lack of important data, we plan to dispose of it after the holidays. Appreciate the help!
You're looking at a swollen battery for sure! I’ve seen many laptops with this issue, not just Chromebooks. Sometimes they swell so much that the screen won't close properly, and the casing can split open without the user even realizing it.
From that angle, I’d say it’s almost certainly a swollen battery. You can check it out easily by removing the bottom panel with a Phillips screwdriver and having a look.
Yeah, that bulge is definitely a sign of a swollen battery! It's really important to address that quickly. The battery may need to be replaced, and sometimes the distortion in the case isn't fixable, but safety comes first!

Just a heads up, be careful when moving it between places with different temperatures; that can really mess with swollen batteries!
