Is the Corsair RM1000x Sufficient for My Setup?

I recently built a gaming system with a 9950x3d processor and a 5090 graphics card. I've noticed that my watt meter shows power spikes between 900 and 925 watts while playing Forza Horizon 5. I'm currently using a Corsair RM1000x power supply. Should I consider upgrading to a 1200W power supply instead?

Just a quick question, are you measuring the wattage for the whole system or just the GPU? I’m asking because that can change the way we look at those numbers.

I’m measuring the total at the wall, excluding the monitor and peripherals.

Short power spikes are typically not an issue, especially with an ATX 3.x PSU, which is designed to handle such demands. In fact, on paper, 1000W is sufficient for your build. If you haven’t experienced any real problems aside from seeing those peak readings, I wouldn’t worry too much. Just remember, those ‘scary-looking numbers’ can be misleading!

Honestly, I’d lean towards getting a 1200W PSU for peace of mind. If your rig is strictly for gaming, 1000W could be fine, but with a 64GB 9950x3d and an overclocked 5090, it’s safer to have the extra power available.

While 1000W is generally recommended for the 5090, I’d personally suggest going for the 1200W just to be on the safe side. Better to have a little extra headroom, especially with such powerful components.

For most consumer setups, 1000W is more than enough, even beyond light overclocking. The Corsair RM1000x is a solid choice and can easily handle those wattage spikes without any issues.
