I'm considering upgrading my CPU as I'm currently using a Ryzen 9 3900X paired with an RTX 3080. I've read that the Ryzen 7 5800X3D is the best upgrade for the AM4 socket, but it has fewer cores and threads than my current CPU and slightly lower clock speed. The 5800X3D is newer but also more expensive, and I'm not sure if it's truly an upgrade. Should I go for this CPU, or is there a better option out there? The budget isn't an issue—I just want to ensure I'm making the right choice for an upgrade.

I switched from a higher-core processor to the 5800X3D. Even though it looks slower on paper, I noticed a nice improvement in frame rates—like a 20fps boost in Cyberpunk. You might be pleasantly surprised!
If you're looking for a more straightforward upgrade, consider the 5900X. I upgraded from a 3900X to a 5950X, and while there were benefits, they weren't as significant as expected. The 5800X3D is definitely the best AM4 option for gaming, but you'll be downgrading in cores.
Yeahhh the prices I'm seeing for the 5800X3D don't feel too good haha. But my CPU will bottleneck my future GPU upgrade, so I guess I should keep checking those listings.
In the world of AM4, the best CPUs for gaming rank like this: 5800X3D > 5700X3D > 5600X3D > 5800X. Check out Hardware Unboxed on YouTube for some detailed comparisons and performance charts that might help you decide!
I’m on a Ryzen 7 3700X with a 2070 Super and planning to upgrade to a 5700X and a 9070XT. Should handle 1440p gaming just fine for a few years—I don’t think I can justify the huge leap to AM5 right now.
Sometimes I wish I could just go back and grab an AM4 3D chip when they were more available. Now I'm stuck with my 5800X and don't see the point in moving to a 5900X. Feels like an unnecessary upgrade at this point!
For gaming, the Ryzen 7 5800X3D is the top choice on the AM4 socket. Its extra L3 cache really improves gaming performance, and most games won't utilize more than 6 cores, making the additional cores of the 3900X less of an advantage. However, keep in mind that the 5800X3D has been hard to find since it’s been out for over a year, and it can be pricey on the used market!
Ahh alright, I'll have to poke my head around for listings then, thanks!

I'm trying to get my hands on one now; big frame increase does sound very nice!
