Is the Ryzen 7 7800X3D and RX 9070/XT a Good Build for a Newbie?

I'm new to PC building, having just started my learning journey a few days ago. My current PC, which is almost 7 years old, has an AMD Ryzen 3 3200G and an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650 Super. It's really struggling with newer games, and I've had to lower graphic settings significantly to keep them playable. I'm looking to upgrade to enjoy a better gaming experience, especially for titles like The Witcher, RDR2, Baldur's Gate 3, and others. I'm currently considering a Ryzen 7 7800X3D paired with an RX 9070 or possibly the XT version. I plan to stick with my existing 16GB of RAM, as I'm not interested in buying new RAM at this time. I want a setup that can handle demanding games at above medium graphics for a few years, without overheating or having excessive power consumption, and I'm not keen on liquid cooling or overclocking just yet. I'll likely continue to use a 1080p monitor and I'm looking at an invertible case for my build. Does this setup make sense, and what cooling solutions would you recommend? My budget is between $2,000 and $2,500 AUD.

To stick with your current RAM, look at options like the 5600X, 5700X, 5800X, or their X3D variants, but keep in mind that the 7800X3D requires DDR5.

Thanks for clarifying that! I’ll definitely need to get new RAM, seems like the way to go.

The combo of the 7800X3D and RX 9070XT is solid, but you can’t keep your current RAM because the 7800X3D works with DDR5, while your current setup is DDR4. You’ll need to upgrade the RAM to make this build work properly.

Good point! I hadn't realized that yet, thanks for the heads-up!

Definitely check out the RAM compatibility before buying; it can save you some stress later!

Make sure to check the refresh rate of your monitor. If you can, consider swapping in a new monitor too. A 7500F with the RX 9070 or even a 9060 Ti with 16GB of RAM is a great choice if you can fit that in your budget.

My monitor is only 60Hz, so that’s definitely an area I need to upgrade in the future!

Consider updating your BIOS to accommodate for newer AMD processors. You might also want to look into the 5700X3D or 5800X3D if you can find them, they could be good options too!

If you’re looking for long-term performance, the RTX 5070 is a better choice in terms of power efficiency and future-proofing. It consumes under 250 watts, which helps keep temperatures down. Also, Nvidia's DLSS technology is fantastic for enhancing graphics without killing performance. If you're set on an AMD build, you might want to stick with the 7500F while saving for future upgrades.

Sounds like a plan! I want a build that lasts, so I’m open to staggered upgrades.
