Is the Ryzen 9 5900X a Good Upgrade in 2026?

I'm currently using a Ryzen 5 5500 and am considering an upgrade. I initially wanted to get a 5700X3D or 5800X3D, but I can't seem to find them available either new or used. The best option I've found is a 5900X priced around €250. I game at 1440p and do a bit of light video editing. I'm not planning to switch to AM5 as that would require a complete rebuild. Given my setup, including an RX 9060 XT with 16GB, would the 5900X be a suitable upgrade, or should I keep searching for an X3D processor?

Absolutely, the 5900X is a solid choice, especially at that price. You might not use all the cores, but the extra performance you get is kind of a bonus. If your main focus was just gaming, the X3D would be ideal, but the 5900X will serve you well for both gaming and editing tasks.

The 5900X should work well with your RX 9060 XT. I had a similar setup with a 5900X and a 3080, and it performed greatly! That said, for pure gaming, you might not see a huge benefit since the CPUs you're considering (like the 5800X) would deliver similar performance. However, if you plan to utilize its extra cores for other tasks, it could be worth it. But if gaming is your main focus, something like the 5800 may also be a good fit.

Also, the 5900X has 64MB of L3 cache compared to 32MB on the 5800X, which could give it a slight edge in gaming performance.

I've been using a Ryzen 9 5900X with a 5080 and 32GB of RAM for 1440p gaming. It's been performing really well overall, with just a slight bottleneck in the most demanding titles. If you run max settings and use features like DLAA, you may notice a tiny slowdown, but overall, I think the 5900X would be a great fit for your setup.

Upgrading to the 5900X is definitely an improvement. It won't dramatically boost gaming performance, but if you need more cores for video editing, it's worth considering. Is your Ryzen 5 5500 not performing up to your needs? If it's still fine, sticking with it might be the way to go.

Consider the 5700X or 5800 as alternatives if you can find them at a good price. They might suit your gaming needs just fine without the need for more cores.
