I have a roughly six-year-old gaming PC with an Intel Core i7-9700K, 32GB of DDR4 memory, an MSI Z390 Gaming Plus motherboard, and an RTX 2070 Super. My current display is 1080p, though I may move to 1440p or possibly 4K later. I'm considering upgrading only the graphics card to an RTX 5070 instead of replacing most of the system. Would the older CPU and platform hold the card back significantly, and would this upgrade make sense for 1080p or a higher-resolution monitor? My power supply is probably 750W, but I'll verify the exact model before buying.

A 5070 should work well as a drop-in upgrade, especially if you move to 1440p. Your 9700K may limit maximum frame rates in some CPU-heavy games, particularly at 1080p, but it won’t make the new GPU useless. You can upgrade the CPU, motherboard, and possibly the platform later if performance becomes a problem.
Before buying, check the exact power-supply model, not just its wattage. A reputable 650W–750W unit with the correct power connector should generally be enough, but an old or low-quality PSU is worth replacing. Also make sure the case has room for the card and adequate airflow.
1440p is probably the best target for this setup. A 5070 is a more comfortable fit there than at 4K, where you may need to rely heavily on upscaling or reduced settings. Native 1440p at high settings should give a smoother and more consistent experience, including with ray tracing.
You don’t necessarily need to replace the motherboard and processor immediately. A faster card can still provide a major improvement over the 2070 Super, and you can monitor actual performance afterward. If games are hitting a CPU limit, then consider moving to a newer platform; otherwise, keep the existing system and enjoy the GPU upgrade.

That’s also where the older CPU matters less. At 4K the GPU becomes the main limitation, but a 5070 still isn’t really a high-end native-4K card for demanding new games.
