Is Upgrading My Motherboard Worth It for a PCIe 4.0 Upgrade?

I'm considering whether it's worth it to upgrade my motherboard from the x370 Taichi to something like the MSI B550 Pro since I'm using an AMD 5800X3D. My main concern is about the PCIe 3.0 on my current board compared to the PCIe 4.0 on the B550. I've just upgraded to a 5070OC from a 1070 and want to make sure I'm not holding back its performance too much. What do you think?

Honestly, the RTX 5070 won't take a massive hit when running on PCIe 3.0 compared to 4.0. You'll likely see just a very small dip in performance. It's about 1% loss since it's not as demanding as the higher-end cards like the RTX 4090 or 5090.

I think you should stick with your current setup for now. You're good for a couple of years with the x370 and upgrading to a B550 will really only give you minimal performance gains. Plus, it might limit your connection options for peripherals and storage. Not worth it in my opinion.

Try running your 5070 with your current motherboard first. The bottleneck might not be as bad as you think. Performance can vary with different games and settings, but it might actually be quite manageable without an upgrade.

What are you talking about? That’s a weird take. Only cards like the 4090 or 5090 would even care about PCIe 3 vs 4.

Upgrading to PCIe 4.0 is pretty unnecessary for your card. You might only gain an extra 1-2 fps at most, and it isn't a noticeable difference. Wait until you're ready for a full upgrade with CPU, MOBO, and RAM before making a move.
