Hey everyone! One of my RAM slots has died on my motherboard, which is pushing me to upgrade my setup since I'll need a new motherboard anyway. I would love some input from those more knowledgeable about this stuff to ensure that what I'm planning will all work together smoothly.
Here's what I currently have:
- Case: Corsair iCUE 4000X RGB ATX Mid Tower
- PSU: CORSAIR RM Series RM850 850W ATX12V
- CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 3700X (3rd Gen)
- CPU Cooler: Noctua NH-D15S
- GPU: TUF GAMING OC GeForce RTX 3080 (12GB)
- RAM: CORSAIR Vengeance RGB Pro (16GB, 2 x 8GB, DDR4 3200)
- Motherboard: MSI MPG X570 GAMING EDGE WIFI
- SSD: SAMSUNG 970 EVO PLUS M.2 1TB
- HDD: WD Blue 4TB SATA (5400 RPM)
- Fans: Corsair iCUE SP120 RGB PRO (6x 120mm)
For upgrades, I'm considering:
- CPU Upgrade: AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D (Granite Ridge, AM5)
- RAM Upgrade: Corsair Vengeance RGB (32GB, DDR5 6400)
- New Motherboard: Either MSI PRO B650 or MSI B650 Gaming Plus, or something else if you have better suggestions.
I'm looking to take advantage of combo deals on Newegg right now, so that's influencing my choices a lot. I'd really appreciate any insights or advice to help me make the right decision!

Honestly, I think both your RAM and motherboard choices might be pricier than necessary. If you go for a faster memory than 6000MHz, you might need to tweak settings for stability, and honestly, the difference isn't huge. I suggest going for a 32GB kit of 6000MHz CL30 RAM - it's around $200 less than what you're looking at. For motherboards, an MSI X870 might be better; it offers improved Wi-Fi and Ethernet, and easier support for the 9800X3D. I've put together a part list that shows good alternatives at cheaper prices if you want to check that out!
Upgrading to the 9800X3D on AM5 sounds like a solid choice! Just a heads up though, when using AM5, RAM specs are key. Aim for DDR5-6000 CL30, as that’ll let the Infinity Fabric run smoothly. Going beyond that can sometimes slow down performance in games. Check out supercheapram.com for the best deals on what you need!
