My Brother’s Laptop Mouse Suddenly Stopped Working, Any Tips?

My brother has an Acer Aspire 7 running Windows 11, and out of nowhere, his trackpad and external mouse stopped working. We've attempted a couple of restarts and even ran an `sfc /scannow` command, which didn't show any integrity violations or fix the issue. I plan to keep troubleshooting as I await any advice here.

As an update, I tried connecting my mouse to his laptop, but it didn't work either, despite a popup suggesting to download the mouse software. Interestingly, it did work on my laptop without needing software initially. I also tried the mouse on another laptop, and it didn't work there either. Thankfully, it supports Bluetooth, so I was able to connect it that way, and it worked fine. I'm starting to wonder if the laptop has somehow damaged the mouse chip or something similar.

First, check the device manager on the laptop. It's possible that the drivers for the trackpad or the USB ports have issues that need fixing. You might also want to press the FN+M key combo as it can toggle the mouse functionality on some laptops. If nothing seems to be moving on the BIOS screen, at least you know it’s not a hardware problem there.

If it’s prompting for software, that’s a good sign that the USB connections are likely okay. Let's just see if the combinations work first!

But what if the mouse has completely fried? Do you think there's a chance it’s still functional? Just trying to cover all bases here.

The prompt to download the software suggests that the USB bus is working fine. I would also suggest you check for any FN key combinations that could enable or disable the trackpad. They sometimes have symbols on the function keys to indicate mouse options.

Yeah, I’ll check those FN keys! It’s frustrating when everything was fine just before this happened.

Definitely, hopefully it's just a small glitch. Keep me posted on what you find!
