My PC Won’t Start After 3 Months of Inactivity – What Can I Do?

Hey everyone, I recently tried to power on my computer after not using it for three months, but it won't start. I've already replaced the motherboard battery, but that didn't do the trick. I also tested the power supply using a paperclip, and the PSU fan spins up, so at least there's power there. I'm looking for suggestions on what else I could check or try to get my computer running again. Any help would be appreciated! Thanks!

Have you checked all the connectors to the motherboard? Sometimes, it can be something simple like clogged dust in the fans or thermal paste issues. I recommend taking it apart and giving everything a thorough clean. It might seem basic, but you'd be surprised how often that helps!

No puffy capacitors on mine. Should I remove the CPU to check the thermal paste? How could that be affecting the startup? I've cleaned out some dust but it hasn't made a difference.

I had a similar issue with a PC I built for my granddad. It had been idle for a year, and despite trying a different power supply and RAM, it wouldn't go past the motherboard splash screen. Sometimes, components just fail after sitting too long. Check everything carefully, as it’s frustrating but can happen even with well-built systems!

Interesting that it wouldn't power up after months. Did you have any bad weather, like lightning, during that time? Make sure your setup is in a dry area! To reset things, turn off the PSU and unplug it. Then, hold the power button for about a minute to clear any residual power. Reseat your RAM and try again after plugging it back in!

Are there any signs of life when you attempt to turn it on? Any fans spinning or LEDs lighting up? Also, double-check if the power switch on the back of the PSU is flipped on; it’s easy to accidentally switch that off when moving your PC. If it still seems dead, try connecting only the power supply and motherboard without anything else attached to see if you get any response.
