Hey everyone! I'm a first-time PC owner, having received my brother's old setup for my birthday last year. I've been dealing with some performance issues, and I'm hoping someone could guide me through fixing them. Here are the main problems, listed from most to least important:
1. I want to move my operating system from my hard drive to my SSD without having to do a hard reset.
2. My PC takes around 10 minutes to boot up—I'm guessing this might relate to the first issue, but please correct me if I'm wrong.
3. My RAM usage is incredibly high due to nearly a hundred background processes running, even after I've closed programs in the task manager. I've run malware scans, and there are no viruses that I'm aware of.
4. In general, my PC feels quite slow. I've used older machines from the 2000s and 2010s that seem to run faster. I wonder if it's because my drives are nearly full or due to the high RAM usage.
I'm somewhat tech-savvy but have hit a wall with this, so any help would be greatly appreciated! Here are my specs:
- CPU: Ryzen 7 2700x
- GPU: Nvidia RTX 2060 Super
- Motherboard: ROG STRIX B-450F
- RAM: G.Skill 2x 8Gb DDR4
- Storage: 2TB HDD and 1TB Samsung SSD

Honestly, the best way to solve all these issues is to back up anything important onto a flash drive, reformat both drives, and then install a fresh copy of Windows on your SSD. It might seem like a hassle, but it should clear up the performance issues you're experiencing.
If you're just moving the OS from the HDD to the SSD without a clean install, you're likely just transferring all the existing problems. If you have a legitimate Windows key, it’s worth it to do a fresh install on the SSD and then transfer the files you need from the HDD. There are lots of guides online on how to prep a USB stick for the install—good luck!
I have a disc with Windows 10 on it; can I use that? It's an official copy.
That's what I was thinking... kinda stinks but it is what it is.
