Reflecting on My 4 Years of Programming and Career Choices

I'm nearing the end of my Bachelor's in Computer Science and I can't help but reflect on the past four years. I started programming because I wanted to make games without in-app purchases. I learned C because that was recommended to me, and it set a solid foundation. But as I moved through school, life got complicated. I struggled with online learning, anxiety, and the pressure of exams, especially during COVID. Now, I've covered some programming languages like C++, Python, and even Assembly, but I feel like I haven't accomplished much besides getting decent grades.

I've received a job offer in data science which I turned down since it doesn't interest me, but I'm eager to dive into game development. I'm trying to figure out my path - whether it's teaching, game development, or even high-frequency trading. I've been wrestling with my thoughts on how to choose the right direction for my career, and I'm reaching out for advice from others who may have been in a similar spot. What can I do to find clarity about my future?

It sounds like you're dealing with a common issue for many students—finding direction in your career. Remember that it's completely okay to not have everything figured out yet. Each step you take builds your experience, even if it seems small now. Focus on your interests! If you love programming and have a passion for teaching, maybe explore opportunities in education as well as game development. Don't rush; this is your journey, and finding what resonates with you will take time.

Take it from someone who's been there: you’re not alone. I graduated with a construction degree but realized I wasn’t happy, just like you. I shifted gears into programming with courses and found new paths. The saying 'you can't change the wind, but you can adjust your sails' rings true. You have plenty of time to explore and pivot as you need. HFT and game dev both sound appealing but consider them carefully—what do you want your work to mean? You got this!

I feel you on this, and it’s totally fine to be confused! It’s great that you realize what you enjoy about programming! If you're still torn, think about internships or project work in each area you’re considering. That way, you can get hands-on experience without fully committing to one path just yet. Remember, it’s about balancing what you enjoy with practicality, and you might discover your passion as you try different things!
