Should I Downgrade to a 5080 or Wait for the 5090?

I'm looking for some advice on whether I should downgrade from my RTX 4090 after selling it for a good profit. Two years ago, I purchased it for $1,350 and sold it recently for $2,100. I initially planned to buy a new RTX 5090 for $1,999, but I've realized they're quite hard to find at that price. I have a 4K 144Hz OLED monitor, and while I love playing games at max settings, I'm not sure if I actually need the power of the 5090. I'm considering the RTX 5080 instead, which can be found for under $1,200. I'm leaning towards this option for two reasons: it's super difficult to find the 5090 at MSRP right now, and I doubt I would truly benefit from the 5090's extra capabilities for my gaming. Should I go for the 5080 or hold out for the 5090?

I'd go for the 5080, especially since you can easily find it under $1,200 right now. Just make sure it fits in your case, and don’t forget about good cooling! If you're interested in overclocking, the 5000 series generally handles that well. Plus, the more money you save now could fund your next upgrade later on.

Exactly! I’ve always preferred to keep my system cool and quiet, so that’s a solid tip.

Going for the 5080 sounds like the smarter choice, especially since you can probably max out most games at 4K with it. Also, you can overclock the 5080 to really get the most out of it! If you're mainly playing at 4K 144Hz, you might not need that extra power from the 5090 anyway. Plus, consider the availability issues with the 5090; it could take a while to find one at MSRP!

Great point! I love the idea of overclocking to boost performance without the higher price tag.

Honestly, if you don’t have a pressing need for the money, I’d stick with finding a 5090 if possible. The performance leap is significant, and at $2,000, it’s still a solid investment for future-proofing your gaming setup. But I get it if you’re trying to save; the 5080 is a great card too, just maybe not as ‘future-proof’ as the 5090 could be.

Yeah, that’s true! I guess it depends on how long you plan on keeping the GPU. If you upgrade again soon, maybe the 5090 is worth it.

If you're okay with compromising on graphics quality for a smoother play, then the 5080 is a great move. You can get solid FPS at 4K, and it still gives you a good bang for your buck. Just keep an eye out for deals—it seems like prices fluctuate a lot!
