I am crawling for emails using scrapebox. should i be using a vpn while doing this to make the traffic seem more legitimate?

No, this wont really help as it will still be the same IP from the VPN. What you are looking for is a proxy. Does the same kinda thing that you are thinking the VPN does. It will also make the requests you make seem more legitimate though as they come from different IP addresses.
