Struggling to Get Linux Installed on External SSD – Help Needed!

I'm really frustrated trying to get Linux installed and running. I want to use Ubuntu 24.01 on an external SSD for running SITL on Gazebo with ArduPilot, but I can't get it to work. I've tried installing it over 15 times following various tutorials, but it either gives me locked directories, doesn't boot after the first time, or drops me into BusyBox instead of reaching the desktop. I'm not a software developer and I often don't understand the error codes I encounter. I want to avoid dual-booting because I have a lot of important files on my internal drives. I'm looking for a proper guide or reliable steps to successfully install Linux on an external SSD. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated!

Have you thought about using a tool like Rufus for preparing your USB? Also, after installation, make sure to remove your installation media so it doesn’t try to boot from that again. It sounds like you’re really close to getting it right!

Check out the installation tips in our wiki! They might have exactly what you need. And just a heads up, always have a stable connection during installation. Little things like using an Ethernet cable can avoid a lot of headaches down the line!

It might be worth checking where you got your Ubuntu ISO from and how you're making the install media bootable. Not all tools work the same way. Remember to connect the external drive properly and ensure it’s recognized in BIOS. If you’re still having trouble, make note of any error messages and search those specifically.

First off, take a deep breath. It sounds like you're facing some frustrating issues. Make sure you're clear on your installation method. Are you using a USB drive for the installation media? Also, have you checked the boot order in your BIOS? You might need to prioritize the external SSD there. Sometimes the installation doesn’t take because the external drive isn’t recognized correctly, so check those connections too.

If you're not getting past the first boot, playing around with the BIOS settings usually helps. Sometimes, switching the boot order can do the trick. Also, have you tried installing with an Ethernet cable connected? That can help avoid issues during installation.
