Struggling to Get Server Hardware: Is This the New Normal?

Hey everyone, I've been waiting for two weeks for a server that will host a virtual environment with SQL and a couple of VMs. Normally, I order from Dell without issues, but now they're experiencing significant delays on parts like chassis and NVMe drives. My configuration is pushed out over 30 days, which is frustrating. They keep pushing SATA SSDs instead of the NVMe drives I want, which isn't an option for my needs.

I've reached out to Lenovo as well, but haven't heard back from them. I'm considering HPE, which I wasn't keen on before, or even buying refurbished from Dell's outlet. It seems like AI demand is seriously affecting hardware availability. Is anyone else struggling to get decent server hardware from any vendor? Should I expect these delays for medium to high-end systems going forward? Appreciate any insights!

If you're okay with used gear, Amazon is a treasure trove for server hardware. You can grab an R640 for under $1000. It’s worth looking there!

Definitely! Just check who the seller is for warranty info. It’s crucial to know you’ll have support if something goes wrong.

30 days?! Can I contribute to your balance and get some metal too? 😂 Things are tough out here!

Consider checking out vendors like TechMikeNY, SaveMyServer, or ServerMonkey. They offer refurb options that can be a good deal, often with warranties. You could get something from a generation back for less than half the price of a new Dell. We’ve been relying on them since the supply crunch hit, and so far, so good!

I’ve used ServerMonkey too, their prices are decent and they have solid support. Definitely a viable option!

If you already have Dell infrastructure, sticking with a refurbished Dell may be your best bet. Introducing a new vendor for just one urgent order might complicate things in the long run. Besides, everyone is facing the same hardware issues, so exploring used options seems like a smart move.

Right? I sourced used Dell equipment during the shortages before. Not ideal but it meets immediate needs!

Thanks for validating my choice! Seems like we’ll just have to adapt to these delays for now.

You're definitely not alone in this. The whole supply chain is impacted, and 30 days actually isn't bad right now. We’ve also seen delays of over a year for some components during the pandemic. If you need hardware sooner, you might have to make some compromises, but be prepared to wait longer regardless of vendor.

Exactly! 30 days is surprisingly quick. If you had asked a year ago about lead times, the answer would be much worse.
