I'm looking to replace a laptop currently being used as a small data server in my RV with a compact, rack-mounted server. The setup is semi-rugged, so it's exposed to dust and doesn't always have AC. I'm running a SQL Express server that typically serves around 50 users. Ideally, I need something shallow-mounted and durable enough to handle the occasional bumps of being on the road. I've got two spare servers, and we back things up to the cloud just in case. Anyone have specific recommendations for a 1-2U blade server or similar for this purpose?

I recommend looking into something like the Dell PowerEdge Rugged series. They’re specifically designed for tough environments, and you won’t need a lot of horsepower as you're mainly running a database that doesn't require a GPU. These can give you the performance you need without the extra complexity of a full blade setup.
You probably shouldn't go for a blade server since they usually require a larger blade center, which wouldn't save you much space at all. Instead, consider a rugged tower server, or even a compact rack-mounted server. Supermicro offers some great small form factor servers that are nearly the same size as a laptop, and they're pretty reliable too. I used one for my home lab and it worked like a charm! Thanks for the suggestion! I needed a small form factor rack mount. That link is super helpful!
If your setup is really rugged, consider using a sealed rack enclosure with thermoelectric coolers to keep the equipment safe and cool. Pair it with a low-powered server and SSDs to reduce thermal output—this could really help with the lifespan of your hardware in tough conditions.
That actually sounds like a solid option! I love that it's built for rugged use, definitely fits my needs.
