Using Azure VMs for Coding While Traveling: Is It Feasible?

Hey folks! I'm working on a React app in my free time, and I have a trip to Europe coming up next month. I'd like to use some of the flight time to keep working on my project. My plan is to get an Azure subscription, set up a virtual machine with Windows 11, and preconfigure it with my development environment, including Node.js, VS Code, Git, etc. Then, I want to connect to this VM using my iPad as a thin client via RDP. I'll pull my app code from GitHub and make updates during the flight using the in-flight WiFi. I'm opting for the iPad since my laptop is bulky and I don't want to carry it around while traveling. I'll only need the VM for about two weeks. Has anyone tried using an iPad with Azure VMs like this while traveling, especially on flights or internationally? I'd appreciate any feedback!

If you're looking for better performance, you might try Azure Virtual Desktop (AVD) or Windows 365. They could be more optimized for those kinds of setups and might help with the lag issue.

Honestly, why not just relax on the plane? You could enjoy a movie or get some sleep. You can always code over a nice coffee or beer once you hit Paris!

Just curious, where’s your departure point? Those egress charges for Azure could add up a bit, so it's something to keep in mind!

Have you thought about using GitHub Codespaces? It could give you a good coding environment without needing to set up a full VM.

Based on my experience, you might face significant lag using an RDP connection, especially over in-flight WiFi. It's worth considering alternative remote connection tools like TeamViewer; they might provide a better experience.

Yeah, I get that! Just keep your expectations in check, and if it doesn't pan out, it's alright! I’d suggest bringing a book or something to pass the time.
