What are the best options for open source software catalogs?

I'm looking for recommendations on software catalogs. I've tried using Backstage, but I found it too complex to set up for my small team of about 10 engineers. Most of the alternatives I've come across are SaaS solutions, and I'm wondering if they're worth the expense. What do you use to manage your software catalog?

We tried Backstage as well, but it felt like we were adopting a Great Dane when all we needed was a goldfish. For a smaller team, a straightforward repository with markdown pages and some tagging gives us around 90% of what we need with minimal hassle. SaaS tools are okay, but they often require monthly fees just to avoid writing out a README.

I've had some friends working at Port, and I checked it out. It's incredibly flexible, but you really need to know what you're looking for in a catalog or developer portal; otherwise, it can get overwhelming.
