What GPU Can I Use with My Old Motherboard?

I'm trying to revive an old PC I had when I was a kid, but I've run into a bit of a problem. I threw away the GPU when I upgraded years ago, and now I'm not getting any video output. I suspect it's trying to output to a GPU that isn't there anymore. Can anyone suggest a compatible GPU for my motherboard? Also, is there a way to get it to output video from the CPU without having to access the BIOS? I've included a link to a picture of the original GPU I lost. You could go with any PCIe video card from around 2006 to 2015, or even older PCI cards. Just remember, you might also have some integrated graphics on your motherboard. I noticed there’s a VGA output on the back, so you might want to try using that. Just be aware that it might not work with all setups. If your VGA-to-HDMI converter isn't giving you a signal, you might want to check your connections or see if there’s a way to switch the output settings.

For your setup, GPUs like the GTX 950 or even the GTX 750/750 Ti could be solid options as they still have BIOS support and shouldn't need extra power plugs. Just be cautious with the 900 series, as that’s where some features start becoming limited, but they do have XP drivers if that’s the OS you're going for.

The top slot should be PCI-E, likely 16 lanes gen 2, which means you can use newer generation cards too. You might also need to replace the CMOS battery if the PC has been sitting unused for a while. Don’t forget to clean out the CPU cooler so it has good airflow.

For your setup, I recommend looking at Nvidia 1030 or 1050 GPUs. They have good BIOS support and work well with older systems like yours. Just a heads-up, modern AMD cards have pretty much dropped support for older BIOS systems, so they might not be your best bet. Also, if you're still running Windows 10, keep in mind it's reaching its end of life soon, so transitioning to something like Linux Mint could be worth considering if you still want to use the PC online.
