What Graphics Card Should I Upgrade to for My Son’s Desktop?

I'm looking to upgrade the graphics card for my son's desktop, which he built last December with some help from a friend. Right now, he's been using the onboard graphics, and I'd like to get a mid-level to a low high-end graphics card as a Christmas gift. However, the friend who assisted me is no longer in the picture, and I'm unsure about compatible options. Here are the specs of his build:

- Motherboard: GIGABYTE B550M DS3H AC (AM4, B550, Micro ATX)
- Processor: AMD Ryzen 5 4600G, 6-Core, 12-Thread Desktop Processor
- Power Supply: Thermaltake Smart BM3 850W 80Plus Bronze Semi-Modular
- RAM: Silicon Power Value Gaming DDR4 16GB (2x8GB) 3200MHz
- Case: DeepCool MATREXX 40 3FS with good airflow and cooling.

I really appreciate any help and recommendations!

For a new card, I’d suggest looking at the RTX 5070 or the RX 9070. They're good fits, but be aware that going much higher could lead to your CPU bottlenecking performance.

The RTX 5070 typically has broader compatibility and should work well with your power supply setup, but the RX 9070 offers better raw power. Just keep in mind it falls short on features compared to Nvidia cards. I’d recommend checking out some comparison videos to see which fits better for you. By the way, maybe consult with your son about his preferences too!

True, but these options are quite a bit pricier compared to the rest of the components, and the CPU may hold back performance quite a lot in gaming.

You might want to consider getting a used RX 6600 XT for a budget-friendly upgrade. It's a great mid-range option that should work well with your build!
