I recently had my laptop stolen and it had a lot of sensitive files on it. I'm feeling pretty devastated right now. It was a Microsoft laptop but I had the location feature turned off. Even though it had a password, I'm aware that doesn't mean much in terms of security. The police are involved, but I'm trying to figure out what I can do through my Microsoft account. Is there anything I should be doing right now?

Sorry to hear about your laptop! If your 'Find My Device' feature wasn’t on, you might be out of luck. Just to clarify, if you set it up with a Microsoft account, you might have some protection as they have been enabling encryption by default for Windows 10 and later. Definitely change all your passwords, though; it's better to be safe than sorry!
You should definitely assume the worst and start changing passwords for all your accounts—emails, banking, socials, and anything else you might have accessed from that laptop. Once the laptop's in someone else's hands, they can access anything you had saved if it's not encrypted. Hopefully, you had backups somewhere!
The password won't do much if your drive wasn't encrypted. If it wasn't, someone could easily access your files by hooking it up to another computer. So, make sure to lock down everything quickly. If you had BitLocker enabled, at least it would make it harder for anyone to access your data. Also, check your Microsoft account under 'My Devices' to manage any linked devices.
