What should I do if my new motherboard doesn’t support my 5.1 speaker setup?

I just built a new computer with a Gigabyte Aorus X870 Elite Wifi7 motherboard, and I realized too late that it only has an SPDIF Out, Mic, and Line Out for audio connections. My old 5.1 speakers use three plugs: yellow for front/center, green for rear, and black for the subwoofer. Is there an adapter I can get, or should I look for an external sound card? It feels outdated to need a sound card in 2025, but I might have no choice! Help!

If you're not too picky about audio quality, you could also look into a USB sound card. There are plenty of options available, ranging from budget to high-end. Just make sure to check reviews before making a choice!

Just remember, SPDIF will still be SPDIF regardless of the sound card! It's all about what you plan to connect it to.

Your motherboard likely has a Realtek 5.1 chip, which means you can actually configure those three ports. Just click on the Realtek icon in your taskbar and set them up based on which cables you have plugged in. It's a bit tricky, but it should work!

Honestly, your best bet might be to just grab a sound card. The SPDIF is optical and not going to work for your setup as is, and the Mic is definitely input only. You need a dedicated output option for your speakers.

If you're looking for an immediate solution, consider getting an SPDIF to 5.1 analog adapter from Amazon. They’re pretty affordable, between $20 and $50, and they convert the signal for you nicely. It’s a neat little box that does the trick!

First, make sure to load the sound drivers. Once that’s done, you can set up which ports are used for your front and sub/center speakers, as well as the headphone jack on your case for the rear. Just make sure your case has a headphone jack!
