What to Expect in a Technical Account Manager Interview?

Hey everyone! I just completed my online assessment and have my first round of interviews for a Technical Account Manager position coming up. I'm curious if I should expect technical questions during the interview, like scenarios for troubleshooting issues. For instance, they might ask how to diagnose intermittent high latency for an application using Amazon EC2 and RDS, or something simpler like explaining TLS. Anyone have insights on what kind of questions I might face?

Honestly, I’d recommend considering a Solutions Architect role instead of a Technical Account Manager. If you decide to stick with the TAM path, be prepared for a variety of questions that test your general technical knowledge across multiple domains. It’s tough to study due to the broad range of topics, but just ensure you have a solid foundation in infrastructure concepts. Good luck!

But why do you prefer SA over TAM? Aren't they just different fields focusing on support versus sales?

As a former Technical Account Manager, I can tell you that technical interviews often measure your depth and breadth of knowledge rather than expecting you to have expert-level understanding across all areas. You should be ready to dig deep in 2-3 domains related to the role, but remember, it's okay to say "I don't know" if you’re unsure about something. Expect open-ended questions like explaining what happens when a user types a URL in a browser, as it allows you to showcase your thought process. Also, know that you'll likely encounter general computing concepts rather than AWS-specific questions. Just be yourself and aim for a relaxed yet informative dialogue! Good luck!
