What Types of Groups Can Be Used for Group-Based Licensing in Microsoft?

I'm looking to understand which user group types are eligible for group-based licensing assignments. I know that security groups can definitely be used, but what about Microsoft 365 groups? I've read that security-enabled Microsoft 365 groups might work too, but there's a lot of conflicting info out there, even from different AI tools. Can anyone clarify this for me?

Honestly, if you're unsure, the easiest way is to just create a Microsoft 365 group in your tenant and test it. I did it myself and can confirm that it works. But I'm curious as to why you'd want to go that route in the first place!

I don't have a tenant right now to try it myself. I only have an Azure for Students subscription, but I can't use Entra. If I had access, I’d definitely give it a shot!
