I'm looking for a suitable Linux distribution for my 2012 laptop that I bought in 2013. It has an Intel i7 3630QM processor and 8GB of RAM. My main needs are to run various VPN clients and have decent performance for internet browsing, including streaming content. I've heard Linux Mint 22.1 with the Xfce Edition could be a great choice, but I'm open to other suggestions too. Another concern is that I'm still using the old HDD, and I'm unsure about what SSD would be compatible given the laptop's age. Unfortunately, I can't afford to upgrade to a new machine right now. I'm not very tech-savvy, so any advice would be appreciated!

Linux Mint should serve you well, especially any version you choose. I’ve used it on older hardware without any issues. For your specs, the Xfce version would likely perform really well!
I've been using Linux Mint with the Cinnamon desktop on a T430 that has similar specs, and it works perfectly. If you're considering upgrading to an SSD, that's definitely the best bang for your buck. Just make sure to get a standard 2.5" SATA drive—most should work with your laptop!
If you're looking for something lightweight, I'd recommend Q4OS. It has a nice interface that resembles Windows, which makes it easy to use, and the Trinity variant is particularly light on resources. You can find it on their website.
You actually have better specs than my old ThinkPad from 2013, which runs just fine with Cinnamon Mint. I would go with the Xfce version, it should absolutely fly on your laptop!
I've tested several distros like Mint, Kubuntu, and Zorin on laptops with similar specs, and they all performed well. Mint is the one I stuck with because it felt the most comfortable to me, but you can't go wrong with any of them.

Absolutely, Xfce will definitely give you smoother performance on that setup compared to Cinnamon!
