What’s the Deal with the Front M.2 NVMe Slot on Asus ROG STRIX B650E-I?

Hey everyone, I'm a bit confused about the front M.2 NVMe slot on my Asus ROG STRIX B650E-I motherboard. According to the manual, it should fit a 2280 length drive under the heatsink, but that hasn't been my experience. I had to put my NVMe in the back, where it's getting pretty hot—around 86C+ according to HWiNFO. Does anyone have recommendations for NVMe drives that will definitely fit under the front slot with the OEM heatsink? I'm considering returning the one I'm using due to the high temps at the back. Thanks a lot!

You should be good with any 2280 NVMe that doesn’t come with its own heatsink. That way, you'll avoid the length problem and fit nicely under the front heatsink without overheating issues!

I also used a drive that I can confirm worked well, and it was just a regular 2280 size without any extra cooling. Here’s what I had: WD SN580, but make sure it's not too long!

I have the same motherboard, and I can confirm that a 2280 NVMe fits fine in both the front and back slots. It sounds like it might just be a compatibility issue with your specific drive.

I tried fitting a drive too, and it was way too long for the front slot—ended up using a WD SN580. That one was a no-go for me!
