I'm looking to upgrade my GPU and I can't decide between the RTX 2070 and the RX 6600 XT. My main focus is video editing, but I also want to game. I've heard that the RX series doesn't support ray tracing as well, and I'm not sure if that's true. Can anyone provide some guidance on which would be better for my needs?

If video editing is your priority, you might want to lean towards the RTX 2070. It has better performance in productivity tasks thanks to its hardware encoding capabilities. Plus, most editing software like Premiere and Resolve utilize NVENC, which makes exports much faster and puts less strain on your CPU. While the RX 6600 XT is a stronger card for gaming, its encoding quality isn't on par with Nvidia's. Also, don't stress too much about ray tracing for video editing; it's more relevant for gaming.

Consider what software you'll be using for editing. For DaVinci Resolve, having more VRAM is crucial, while Adobe products benefit from CUDA, which is Nvidia exclusive. The RX cards support ray tracing, but it's not as efficient as Nvidia. Checking out benchmarks and articles specific to your chosen GPUs might help clear things up. Look at what games support ray tracing too; if you’re not interested in those games, it might not be a big deal.

For editing, if budget allows, going for a 50-series Nvidia GPU would be ideal. They have improved transcoding support, especially for higher bit rates that are great for video work. Although a secondhand RTX 2070 might save you some cash, a 5060 offers better overall performance and future-proofing. Just something to think about based on your editing needs!

Did you consider RX GPUs at all for your decision? They can be great in gaming, but still, not all are built for video work.
