Which is better for my first PC build: 2 sets of 2x8GB RAM or 1 set of 2x16GB RAM?

I'm building my first PC during this tough RAM shortage and really want to get to 32GB, especially since I've been stuck with an un-upgradeable 8GB laptop. My chosen motherboard (GIGABYTE B550M K) has four slots for RAM. I'm considering buying 2 sets of OLOy DDR4 2x8GB for $60 each instead of going for the Silicone Power DDR4 2x16GB set for $160. If 2x16GB is the better option, should I still consider getting the 2 sets of 2x8GB now and then upgrade to 2x16GB later when prices hopefully drop?

Going with 2x16GB is definitely the smarter choice. If you buy 8GB sticks now and later decide to upgrade to 64GB, you might find the 8GB sticks worthless. Always aim for bigger single modules when possible, and running in dual-channel mode will give you the best performance. Your B550 setup should allow for future upgrades as long as the motherboard supports it.

It's usually a good idea to stick with 2x modules for better performance. Some motherboards can handle 4 sticks, but often it's not optimal depending on your CPU and BIOS.
