I'm a photographer and usually transfer my photos using an SD card reader. After transferring, I always delete the photos to free up space. However, today I ran into a problem. When I tried to delete some photos from my USB, I got an error message saying, "delete failed, failed to delete items from 'usb drive (D:)', we may not have permission from the device." This has never happened before and I'm not sure what to do.

It sounds like your card might have switched to read-only mode. This can happen to SD cards as they age, especially if they detect a serious issue, to protect your data. You could try formatting it using a tool from sdcard.org, but if that doesn't work, you might want to test with a different card reader just in case the reader is malfunctioning. Also, check if your SD card has a write-protect switch and make sure it’s not accidentally enabled.
Your card could be failing. Simple solution—try formatting the SD card instead of just deleting the files. That might clear up any issues.
Have you checked the write lock on the SD card? Some of them have a physical switch that can block writing. If it’s in that position, you won’t be able to delete or write anything.
Most likely, your SD card is dying and switched to read-only mode to safeguard your files. It’s a common protective measure for failing cards.
Thanks so much, everyone! It turns out it was the switch—didn't even realize there was one! Appreciate all the help!
