Why Can’t I See My Files After Moving My HDD to a New PC?

Hey everyone! I recently transferred a hard drive from my old PC to a new one. I formatted the drive, saved some files I wanted to keep on it, and then connected it to the new computer. While the drive shows up fine in File Explorer and indicates that there are files on it (showing the correct amount of used space), I can't see any of the files when I click on it. Strangely, when I reconnect the drive to my old PC, all the files are there. I've restarted my new PC several times and even tried reseating the drive, but nothing has worked. Any suggestions on what might be going wrong and how I can fix this? Thanks!

It's possible the files are hidden. If you're on Windows, try going to File Explorer, clicking on 'View', and then selecting 'Hidden items'.

Also, you can navigate to the drive and in the address bar, type 'cmd' which opens the command prompt at that location. Type 'dir' and hit enter to list all files—this might show you if they're really there or not!

Thanks for the tips! I did the hidden items thing, but there's still nothing showing up. I tried using the cmd, and it just says 'File Not Found'. What does that mean?
